Santa Monica Library Cistern
Location: 2201 Pico Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90405
At the Pico branch of the Santa Monica public library system, a huge underground cistern was constructed as part of the building site’s stormwater management plan. Able to hold up to 200,000 gallons of water, the cistern collects rain water that falls on the roof and stores to be used for irrigation of the library’s landscaped garden areas. In addition to providing water for irrigation, this stormwater capture strategy prevents runoff from heavy rains from overburdening the local stormwater system.
